The Worlds Worst 40th Birthday

Welcome to my corner of the After 40 Club, where reality is stranger than fiction and my 40th birthday was a masterclass in surrealism.

I'm Casey, founder of The After 40 Club and proud member of the "2020 Made Me Question Everything" club. While the world was stockpiling hand sanitizer, I was unknowingly stepping into a soap opera disguised as my 40th year on Earth.

Picture this: My husband, bless his forgetful heart, completely blanked on my birthday. But fear not! Our neighbor – who also happened to be our employee and my husband's secret paramour (plot twist!) – swooped in to save the day.

Yes, you read that right. The woman I'd been unknowingly bankrolling both professionally and culinarily (nothing says "thanks for the affair" like signing paychecks and providing hot meals) transformed into a birthday fairy. There she was, in full Marilyn Monroe regalia – wig, evening gown, and all – serenading me with "Happy Birthday" after a hard day of... well, work and infidelity.

Talk about a weird day. I'm still not sure if I should have applauded the performance or called my therapist. Possibly both.

Now, almost 4 years into my 40s, I've learned that life can be unpredictable, ironic, and occasionally worthy of a daytime Emmy. After a much-needed (3-hour plus) relocation and enough perspective to find the humor in the ridiculousness that was the situation, you can find me perfecting my "I'm too old for this drama" eye roll and planning elaborate schemes to ensure future birthdays are remembered – without any surprise musical numbers (or husbands).

Join me as I traverse the wild terrain of my 40s – where the nights are earlier, the plot twists are plentiful, and the birthday candles are... well, let's just say they're not the only things burning around here.
